I like hip hop music and words, so Rap Rap Rappin' on Heavens Door sounded right up my alley... I mean, rap is basically putting clever words to a beat right?! Poetry, music AND comedy on a Friday night - what's not to like!

At the Loop Project Space & Bar (next door to Loop roof entrance) we found Cristina ' Rhyme ' Spizzica ( The Improv Conspiracy) and Jeremy ' Zone ' Hughes ( The Big HOO-HAA! ) on stage in their co-ordinated rhinestone studded tracksuits, ready to embark in a freestyle rap battle of sorts.

Crafting a completely improvised and unscripted comedy and rap show from one word suggested by someone in the audience may sound like a challenge to most people, but RhymeZone easily took our chosen word - 'bread' - to the most unexpected and hilarious of places...

Aside from references to Gogglebox and Queer Eye (season 3), most of our show centred on the almighty (and flailing) battle between the land and water/ sea people.

You see, Richard Cranium (yes - dick head) fell asleep on the job and lost control of the inland waters. He then goes undercover to learn the sea people's secrets and recover the inland waters but is so bad at being a spy he is caught out and asked to go undercover for the sea people.

And here begins the existential identity crisis... Which side is he on and why? What's really the difference between the inland water and sea people? It's very confusing for him, and for us!

The rap rap rappin' part of the show means that whenever the beat drops (thanks DJ!) RhymeZone would break into a mini rap battle - all the while continuing the story...

In the end, the two sides - the water and land people - are able to put their difference aside and unite in a newfound common goal - to take over space!

Maybe they realised they are both the same - the usual daddy issues and searching for true love - OR maybe their desire to conquer space is just stronger than their dislike for each other.

And suddenly this doesn't feel like just a silly, funny story but a lesson about humans and humanity - well, at least we get a happy-ish ending!

It all sounds a bit random and nuts and that's because it is. That's the beauty of improv and no two nights will ever be the same - so maybe think of a more interesting word than 'bread' to throw at them and enjoy the hilarious rap rap rappin' ride!

Show are at 8;15pm and run for about 55 minutes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights next week - https://www.comedyfestival.com.au/2019/shows/rap-rap-rappin-on-heaven-s-door
