On the last Tuesday of every month,
Rhyme, Rhythm and Reason brings poetry and music to lovers of language in Ipswich. The free event was a big success in 2014, albeit under another name, and so it's back again for 2015.
Produced by
Solidarity Külture Club, the regular celebration of poetry sees a mixture of the spoken and sung word, with a headline poet combining text and lyrics to the beat of live music. The headline poet then answers questions about their own work, before the open mic session, during which audience members can get up to perform their own works or their favourite works by established poets.
The atmosphere and ambience is quite special, since the venue, Studio 188 is the old Ipswich Baptist Church, designed by Richard Gailey and erected in 1877. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly vibe leads to lively discussions of language and culture. The only rule is that readers are asked to keep the content of their works family friendly, since
Rhyme, Rhythm and Reason is an all-ages event.
Audiences can bring their own food and drinks to the show, with Studio 188 representatives saying some people bring a pizza and a bottle of wine, while others might pick up some pasta from the restaurant across the road or bring something from home.
The free event is open to all people of all ages and walks of life – just as long as you love to listen to or perform poetry, you're welcome. If you'd like to perform in the open mic section, let the organiser, Christian, know as you arrive. Bookings are not required, but if you'd like to know more about which musician and poet is headlining each month, you can visit the Studio 188 website.
