American artist Tiffanie Mang, NSW artist Warwick Fuller who has been the official artist for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall for their last three tours of Australia, and renowned WA painters Leon Holmes and Brendon Darby will headline an art exhibition to celebrate the work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

They will join many notable WA artists including former feature artists at Plein Air Down Under, Val Brooks (pastels) and Sue Hibbert (water colour); former PADU prize winners, Jos Coufreur (acrylic); Andy Dolphin (oil and watercolour); Deborah Zibah (acrylic and oil), Leanne Pearson, and many more.

The RFDS Spirit of the Landscape art exhibition is a partnership between Mandurah outdoor painting festival Plein Air Down Under and the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Western Region). Nearly 50 works by 22 award-winning artists will honour the work of the RFDS across the country.

Event organiser Barb Thoms said the works of these plein air artists were a perfect match to the work of the RFDS because of the artists' profound respect for the land, the natural environment and the stories of community that emerge from the landscape.

Barb said the paintings tell those stories by portraying a moment in real-time, capturing the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, colour and movement.

The exhibition will open on Saturday, September 10 – on the World-wide Paint Out weekend - and run until Sunday, October 16, which includes the Mandurah Arts Festival weekend.

The Mandurah Performing Arts Centre's opening times are from 10am to 5pm, with additional weekend and evening hours when shows are on. Entry is free and works will be on sale at a range of price levels.

The exhibition will help promote the work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service which for more than 90 years has been providing a crucial medical link for people living in rural and remote Australia.

RFDS has grown to be the world's largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisation. It provides emergency medical and primary health care services to more than 1000 people every day to the people of rural and remote Australia.

RFDS services a region of 7.69 million square kilometres with 24-hour aeromedical emergency services that can reach even the most remote locations in Australia within hours. That includes Western Australia, where the RFDS operates in far from ideal conditions and the harsh landscapes of the world's largest health jurisdiction.

It also offers telehealth consultations, fly-in fly-out GP and nurse clinics, mobile dental services, patient transfers, and many other health services.

The RFDS Spirit of the Landscape art exhibition is being held in conjunction with Australia's leading outdoor painting festival Plein Air Down Under, held annually in Mandurah and the Peel Region over the September long weekend. The event is part of an international circuit of plein air festivals held in Ireland, the Netherlands, mainland USA and Hawaii.

Artists of all levels attend the festival to paint en plein air with world-class tutors available to the general public with free demonstrations, artist talks and special events.

'En plein air' is a French expression that means "in the open air". These plein air artists make the most of the quality of the outdoor world with its natural light and atmosphere, using a range of mediums from oils to watercolours and pastels. The plein air movement is growing and is currently the largest movement in art history.
