I'm a Sunshine Coast journalist who jumped out of a lengthy mainstream media career 18 months ago to do some hearty work for the soul. A pescatarian sharing with you her secrets on our little piece of coast paradise.

An adventure awaits ...
IT wasn't so long ago that "massage' was one of those "dirty" self indulgent activities that the majority of us simply lumped in with "facial" and "manicure". You know - those purely narcissistic past-times engaged in only to by those with both the time and money to do so. At the very least I believed it to be a form of past time pampering for only the bored and unimaginative.

That's the thing about a life and death crisis the very least of the things that you can guarantee will change is your perspective.
Anyone who has travelled this road to recovery like myself knows the desire to want more than traditional medications and standard medical opinions in the search for a return to good health both physically and mentally.

Several years since my own misadventure, I have nothing but rapturous praise for my natural therapy experiments - acupuncture, naturopathy, kinesiology - now a part of my regular health plan. Experiencing remedial massage was only a matter of time, and so I jumped at the opportunity to meet Joel and Janelle Mitchell's team at the Gold Coast's Revolution Massage.

I find natural therapy/remedial therapy rooms completely intoxicating. Coordinated well - there is an ambience and a delicate combination of colours, lighting, music is to me which work - hopefully - in harmony with each other. It's what I imagine most people feel when they walk into five star accommodation. My "revolution" welcome only heightened my delight.

Ah... the serenity!

Greeting me on my arrival is the delightful Hannah Baldwin whose warmth and enthusiasm for her profession is heartfelt. "It is definitely now being seen as an essential part of a good health care regime, the long term benefits are becoming more widely recognised," she says her hands setting to work on the years of neglect in my over-exerted, over-exercised upper and lower back muscles.

Immediate results from the first two or three sessions, Hannah explains, can see an improved range of motion and relief from pain, improved circulation, endorphin release, reduced spasms and cramping, stretching of tight and weakened muscles.

Long term appointment plans can enhance immunity, lessened depression and anxiety, greater energy and improved concentration.

Though at the time it's hard to immediately reconcile - when my eyes suddenly spring back open being acutely aware that I have fallen asleep 15 minutes into my 60 minute deep tissue experiment.

But it's all part of the physical manipulation of my entire body. I am now completely relaxed and ready to have my body reading for kneading into the beginning process of repair.
Being an extremely active individual who dare I say it is partial to the sensation of mild discomfort in the pursuit of better general health, I had mentally prepared myself for what I had heard can often be sharp bursts of pure agony.

Having told Hannah to "let me have it with both barrels" - I braced myself for the blasts to come. Instead what followed was a completely pleasant and manageable experience infused with momentary twinges of mild distress that even my renowned hypochondriac bestie could endure. My "guide" Hannah is completely attentive monitoring my body's responses through physical and verbal encouragement. By the hour's end I feel this complex mix of energy and complete relaxation that remain consciously aware that I carry through to day's end.

It has to be said this experiment in any other hands, particularly those less capable, this could -and has according to the "encouragement" from some well-meaning friends - resulted in a complete catastrophe.

Hannah's focus on my personal request and inquiries was entirely unique, professional and utterly satisfying.
It's no surprise to me that remedial bodywork is continuing to be recognised as improving general health - for those suffering chronic diseases, neurological disorders and injuries or those wishing to simply alleviate the pressures of modern day life from their body.

Revolution Massage's Joel and Janelle Mitchell's believe that remedial and relaxation bodywork is a crucial ingredient to a general health and wellness plan. There are health fund rebates available in appointments that range from half hour to a full hour with their team able to come to you at your convenience.
Make the time. You are worth it.
