Revel in Bulimba's best brewery
I hesitated before punishing my tap-and-go addicted credit card. $22 for a schooner of beer and a pot of cider? I know it's the main drag of one of Brisbane's more salubrious suburbs but still. I sipped and rationalised.

Reveal Brewing Co Bulimba on Oxford St

Oxford Street rent, council approvals, excises, double-time wages, the cost of brewing small batch independent beers and all the logistical tripe that we as average punters don't understand all pass through my mind. A belated scan of the beer menu reveals the IPA (7.5%) I ordered is the most expensive beer on offer too. Rationalisation complete - price check before ordering is strongly recommended for the skint though.

Despite being on Oxford Street, the industrial vibe complemented by simple seating, oversized shade umbrellas and artificial grass is pure craft beer venue. Not the full milk crate treatment - that trend has thankfully faded - but it's simple, effective and a great place for people watching.

The theme continues inside with concrete floor, timber bar front and contrasting subway tiles combining nicely. Signage with drink prices, seasonal drops and merchandise options plaster the walls and the dome of the pizza oven provides a substantial hint of the tucker on offer. The whole effect is more purposeful rather than grand design - not quite in keeping with some of the nearby McMansions.

By the time our pizza arrives, I've moved on to an $8 Session Ale. Maybe it's my wallet tasting, but it hits the spot. The pizza itself is decent enough but representative of the venue being more about beer than fine dining. As the barman tells me, they've actually expanded and there's a more extensive dining menu available at their Morningside restaurant and brewery venue.

Like an ever-increasing number of licensed venues, the place is dog-friendly outside. The only downside is that sitting in the converted carpark area does require you to use plastic cups. Not the brewery's choice of course - thank you BCC - but plastic is for a long day at the Gabba rather than high-quality, freshly-brewed beer.

A two-minute walk from Bulimba City Cat/ Cross River Terminal, Revel is the perfect launching pad for a craft beer crawl with Green Beacon, Range and Newstead Brewing all just across the river. Alternatively, combine with The Tap House and The Ox and make it an Oxford Street only crawl.

Either way, Revel is a mainstay of Bulimba's feature street and worth a stop for the quality of beer alone. In fact, it won Best International Lager for its draught NZ Pilsner in the recent 2022 AIBA Champion Australian Beer Award. I'm going to give it a go too but will likely check the price first this time though.
