From Sunday, 1 July 2018 lightweight, single-use plastic bags will be banned from WA shops in a bid to reduce the amount of these bags ending up in landfill, in our oceans and as general litter. Given this, Belmont Forum has a perfectly timed, fun activity to teach the next generation more about recycling, reusing and repurposing in the July school holiday.

The centre will offer a series of activities in which children will learn how to reuse, recycle and repurpose – children are invited to make a 'No Sew' Reusable Tote, a Recycled Veggie Pod or a Mini Bug City Hotel.

The green-themed activities will run from Monday, 2 July through to Friday, 13 July, excluding weekends. Dig out an old t-shirt, coffee mug or tin can and bring them along to Belmont Forum and watch the kids transform them into recycled masterpieces.

Over the weekend of Saturday, 7 July and Sunday, 8 July, mini art maestros can marvel at the creation of a community-planned mural on Wright Street, on the Coles supermarket facade, led by artist Mel McVee. The colourful mural will incorporate quintessential Australian items such as a Red Tail Cockatoo, New Holland Honeyeater, Banksia, Geraldton Wax and Blue Banded Bee.

The dates and times for sessions are outlined below:

*No Sew Reusable Tote – BYO T-shirt from home
Dates: Monday 2 July, Thursday 5 July, Monday 9 July and Thursday 12 July from 10am to 2pm (limited to 180 kids per day)
*Recycle Veggie Pods – BYO old teacup or small coffee cup
Dates: Tuesday 3 July, Friday 6 July, Tuesday 10 July and Friday 13 July from 10am to 2pm (limited to 180 kids per day)
*Mini Bug City Hotel – BYO mug, cup or tin can
Dates: Wednesday 4 July and Wednesday 11 July from 10am to 2pm (limited to 180 kids per day)
*Community Artwork Mural along Wright Street
Dates: Saturday 7 July and Sunday 8 July (weather permitting).

If the kids are showing an interest in recycling, this is one school holiday activity they will thrive in. Bring them to Belmont and let them get creative with those unused household items.
