Reunion Café Dining is a recent addition to the quaint Union Road shopping strip in Surrey Hills. I was lucky enough to be invited to review the café, coming in for a late lunch on a Wednesday afternoon.

You would not know that this bustling and spacious café only opened its doors in August. At about 1pm, nearly all tables were filled. All sorts of people flock to Reunion, from elderly women nattering over coffee to young families enjoying lunch. According to the owner, Jan, it is also a popular breakfast spot for cyclists.

A number of small touches come together to create the perfect café ambience. The comforting smell of coffee lingers in the air and background noise is created by light chatter and the clinking of cutlery. It has the feel of a small café but is actually quite roomy; there is ample space between the tables so you do not feel crowded in.

Before perusing the one-page menu, we ordered our drinks. My friend ordered the 'liver cleanser' juice, which included all manner of liver-blasting ingredients including carrot and ginger. If you are thinking that something that healthy cannot be easy on the tastebuds, think again. A refreshing and slightly sweet juice, it is the perfect companion to breakfast or lunch. Meanwhile, I ordered a coffee, which came perfectly presented with latte art. Reunion uses Atomica coffee, a favourite of many Melburnians with a smattering of cafes across the city sourcing from the Brunswick roasters.

Reunion has an all-day menu with a selection of breakfast and lunch dishes. The menu seems to be arranged roughly in order of light to heavy dishes, starting with chia pudding garnished with fruit and ending with a hearty lamb rump.

My friend ordered poached eggs with asparagus. Drenched in delicious hollandaise sauce, the full-flavour dish would be a perfect breakfast for any time of day.

I decided to be adventurous and get the cashew crumbed eggs. If any other café in Melbourne or indeed the world also serves cashew crumbed eggs, there is no trace of it on the internet. The unique dish consisted of two poached eggs battered, schnitzel-style, in cashew. Each egg sat atop a quiche-like slice. According to the menu, the quiche was made from cauliflower and spinach; my tastebuds did not detect even a hint of cauliflower. The dish came served with tomato relish and a smattering of lettuce. I would highly recommend the cashew crumbed eggs. The flavours worked together beautifully, and it was filling without being too heavy.

We finished off with a cupcake from the desserts display. Despite having eaten more than enough, there is always room for a few bites of chocolate-y heaven. The best bit of a cupcake is always the icing, and thankfully over half of the cupcake's height was rich sugary icing, topped with chocolate flecks. The dessert was beyond delicious, proving that Reunion does sweet just as well as they do savoury.

The interior was another winning aspect of Reunion. As with any good café, you will be so enamoured with your food that you barely notice the colour scheme they so carefully adhered to or the chic patterned stools.

Reunion Café ticks all boxes, with attentive service, great atmosphere, and of course delicious breakfast and lunch fare.
