Songs, stories, shame and regret

'The evil love child of Liza Minnelli and Jim Carey' (per the British Theatre Guide) screams the publicity for Reuben Kaye. I decided during his show PLUGGED! that his style is more like a cross between Peter Allen and Julian Clary, combining the musicality of Allen with the high camp antics of Clary.

Reuben Kaye is hilarious in PLUGGED!

Regardless of Kaye's 'heritage', this is a hilarious show that had every audience member laughing out loud.

Those familiar with The Butterfly Club, where the show is playing, will know the small format rooms which mean the audience is up close and personal with the performers. This format is perfect for Kaye, who enjoys engaging with his audience using his wicked brand of humour. No one is safe; for example, 'openly heterosexual' audience member 'Duncan' was targeted throughout the performance.

But it's all light hearted and adds to the overall humour of the show.

PLUGGED! is a one-man (plus a pianist) cabaret, featuring a clever comedy routine, several songs, some slick costume changes and some help from 'Gloria' (the specially decked out microphone). While Kaye explains he was once told by a teacher that he didn't have the voice to sing, his musicality in PLUGGED! can't be questioned. The song selection is clever, as the songs are likely to be known by the audience. This of course encourages a sing-along ('although not too loud, don't forget who the star is here!'). We particularly enjoyed Reuben's version of 'Down Under'.

Clever song choice promotes an audience sing-along

An all round funny show that left us chuckling well after it had finished. My partner Dave declared it to be 'brilliant'. Even the aforementioned Duncan, with whom I had a brief chat after the show, enjoyed it.

PLUGGED! is playing at The Butterfly Club, Carson Lane (off Little Collins Street) at 10pm from Tuesday to Sunday until 17th April.
