How about a Fringe show this year where you and your children are the stars? Return to the Village is an interactive show for kids and their adults with an airy and friendly style. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Starting as villagers who have found themselves adrift, you'll be welcomed by guides and storytellers and invited to build a new village, one in which everyone has a role to play. You can live out your cubby house dreams together as the performance unfolds to create a magical moment in time.

From the opening Welcome to Country by Taylor Power that places the show in a contemporary cultural context, you'll become immersed in a storybook experience. While everyone is a villager, it's the kids who are given special roles to play in opening avenues of interaction and connection. After settling in and decorating their new homes, the villagers must unite and work together to give life to the beating heart of the new community. Return to the Village is instructional, educational, and emotional, all at the same time.

Writer, producer, and director Marina Barbaro has created something very different with this show. Kids are well known for easily going off tangent. This clever production is just the right length and right level of immersion so that the kids stay on topic the entire time. The guides, Kelly Phillips, Helen Lowry, and Lizzie Bradley are on hand to lead the story and they do a great job empowering children and making them feel a sense of wonder. Lizzie Bradley's soundtrack is smooth and soothing to match the fairy-lit feel of the village.

When my young companions mentioned to me that they felt like the show was over too quickly, I realised that it certainly did seem that way. It was just so interesting that nobody really felt like an hour had just passed.

Return to the Village is suitable for kids up to 11 years old with a penchant for play acting and storytelling. I would encourage parents or guardians to join the show. It's a great way to deepen the connection theme and bring everyone together.

Return to the Village plays at the Kookaburra Cafe at Hendon Studios on the 27th and 28th February and Saturday 6th March at 10.30 am, 12.30 pm, and 2 pm. It's a great way for little kids to access the Fringe Festival and become part of the show. Get tickets here.
