Elbows out ladies (and gents), it's sale time

Have you ever been to RetroStar? It's a massive vintage shop on Swanson street in the city. If you're willing to climb a few flights of stairs, you will be rewarded with the most amazing array of beautiful vintage clothes and accessories from every era.

Have you ever been to a RetroStar Warehouse sale? While the Swanson street store can be a bit pricey, 3 or 4 times a year they throw a Retro Star Warehouse sale, where everything is marked down dramatically. Keen? Just remember the following basic rules to make this sale a successful shopping day.

1) Get in Early! The warehouse that the sale is held in, is located on Stewart street in Brunswick. Brunswick is the hipster capital of the Melbourne and what do hipsters love more than vintage clothes and bargains? Imagine the rush of people at the boxing day sales, combined with the line at the gate on the first day of the Fall Festival and you'll land somewhere close to the mayhem. Try and get there around opening time to avoid too much of a rush. If you do arrive later though, don't stress. The staff do put out new clothes every few hours so that it doesn't get too picked over.

2) Be prepared. While everything available for you to buy is usually priced between $5 and $20 (an absolute bargain compared to their regular prices), it is certainly a no frills kind of event. When I say warehouse, I mean a shed. This means there are no change rooms, no mirrors and certainly no helpful staff to help you with your selections (they are lovely, but they're all busy at the checkouts). If you're a bit conservative, remember to wear tightish clothes that you can easily slip potential purchases over to check for fit. Also, try going with a trusted friend. They can honestly tell you whether a dress "makes your bum look big", without the need for a mirror.

3) A "no frills event" also means that EFPOS and credit card purchases are out of the question. Most items are $10 or under, so you don't have to carry heaps of cash but make sure you have enough notes for any potential purchases. I would also suggest BYOing a shopping bag. They only provide giant, bright yellow, handle-less shopping bags, that scream "I just went to the RetroStar Warehouse sale".

So now you're prepared. Just remember these tips and you'll have a new vintage wardrobe in no time!

There seems to be a discrepancy with the address. Is it in Swanston Street, Melbourne or Stewart St Brunswick, please?

It only happens 2 or 3 times a year though :-)
