Residential choices for an exciting fulfilling life
Ageing has been getting some pretty bad press lately with some even half hoping that the pandemic might cull a few baby boomers. Well, I'm here to inform you that the alternative to ageing is far worse and now with more years to enjoy our retirement, choices abound.

An Overview
I will tempt you with a few unusual choices, then an overview of retirement villages in general and more specifically in the Northern Rivers area of NSW. So please feel free to share this around your fellow volunteers, yes, most are aged people, U3A or garden group.

Relocating
Some choose the life of an ex-pat, finally moving abroad to a country they have some connection with, eg. Spain, Mexico, India, NZ. Others finally fulfil their dream of sea or tree change, relocating to their desired environment but these options can have repercussions for health and support issues later on.

travel or cruise

Travel
One senior did her sums and realised that living on an ocean liner was a cheaper and more fun alternative. She would enjoy quiet mornings in her suite and then join the guests for good food and a variety of entertainment for the later part of the day. Some just book cruises frequently.

Retirement Villages
Some adamantly resist going into a community setting, such as a retirement village, but there are huge advantages. The choices include socialising, staying home or continuing with the things you already do. The big bonuses are that you no longer have to deal with paying rates or unreliable tradesmen. No need to store that lawnmower or all the tools and barbeque as these community settings include maintenance and mowing. Most can choose to maintain the garden area directly around their residence.

But guests and outings are not limited in any way, indeed people are encouraged to keep living a full and rewarding life. And you may meet that ideal travelling companion to do those trips still on your wish list.

Costs Vary
Entry and exit fees are usually much lower if you pay more, or higher if the price is lower. So it's important to do your homework and pick a price and situation that suits you personally. There is also a plethora of choices like various religious or independent providers who often have an aged care facility nearby. An onsite manager and personal alarm system are usually included.

Local Options
Northern Rivers have plenty of older villages with well-established communities such as St Andrews, RSL and Crowley. While other independent establishments such as Oak Tree and Palm Lakes Resort are much newer with really thriving communities and offer more facilities. Again, the conditions and prices vary greatly, so find one tailored to your needs.
