Gus Van Sant adds a ghost
Please note that there are spoilers ahead

Restless is a romantic drama film directed by Gus Van Sant, notably known for Good Will Hunting and Milk. It features the budding talented actress Mia Wasikowska as the female lead, a terminally-ill cancer patient and Henry Hopper, a school dropout who befriends a Japanese ghost.

The film is dedicated to the memory of Henry Hopper's father, American actor Dennis Hopper who passed away in 2010 of prostate cancer.

Enoch (Henry Hopper) periodically attends funerals of strangers in which he meets Annabelle (Mia Wasikowska) The two young strangers begin a troublesome romantic relationship. Annabelle tells Enoch that she works with the cancer patient who passed away at the funeral but later disaffirms this by casually mentioning that she is actually a patient. Enoch seems unaffected by this because of his own near-death experiences but as Annabelle's 3 month death date closes in, he is struck with anger and grief.

Mia Wasikowska gives a compelling performance of a brave young woman struck by misfortune and rewarded by the company of a young man, troubled by the past. The original score by Danny Elfman (who also did the soundtrack for Gus Van Sant's Milk) nicely compliments the inevitable event sequences.

3.5/5
