Sitting tucked away in the main complex of South Pacific Resort, the South Pacific Resort Restaurant isn't somewhere that most people would stumble across by chance. It's a shame, because it provides one of the better experiences in Noosaville.
We were there because we were staying there. The café was open odd hours, but we were drawn by the promise of cocktail specials -the 2pm closing time be damned. While we were there we decided to order some food, on the off chance it would be edible.
We had underestimated the place. By far. Our meals were well presented, with fresh ingredients and a thoughtful combination of flavours. My roast pumpkin salad was frankly delicious; sweet roasted pumpkin slices on a mix of herbs and leaves, with just the right touch of dressing. My companion chose yet another salad, the Caesar, with crunchy but fresh strips of bacon and a smooth, not overwhelming coating of dressing. It's unusual to find such well-prepared salads in a restaurant that rarely sees customers, but there is something to be said for having a chef who isn't run off her feet.
The cocktails were on another level. Although the bar is obviously not used to the cocktail-drinking set, the Musk Mayhem I sampled was enough to make me order another. The combination of musk liqueur, lemonade and soda was surprisingly refreshing for a warm afternoon.
Sitting at the table of dark wood, my eyes resting on the lush foliage surrounding the pool, I was able to convince myself that I was in the tropical paradise I had been after. The bland heat of Noosaville seemed far away.
