RIP Revival
Taxidermy. The art of preservation. While it may not be everybodies cup of tea, there are many out there whose interest is piqued in this strange and oddly beautiful craft.

One of these people is Natalie Delaney-John, owner and facilitator at Rest In Pieces Taxidermy, the only initiative in Australia offering an introductory taxidermy course. This full-day workshop is offered monthly and takes students through the steps of skinning, preserving and mounting their own mouse.

Natalie has been involved in taxidermy since 2012. Working under mentor Gary Pegg, she has spent many hours honing her skills, and recently spent 3 months in Spain working on an exhibition at the Museo de la Caza in Los Yebenes.

The course itself is one of Australia's first since the 70's and runs participants through the basic taxidermic skills in an encouraging, and surprising un-macabre, environment.

Natalie makes for a supportive and encouraging teacher; she is clear with her instruction and skilled in her demonstration. A few dainty touches make the experience a comfortable one, and all up it is not nearly as 'icky' as one would think.

Upon arrival each participant receives a neat little box of tools and is introduced to their very own mouse, complete with name and personalised toe tag. It creates a strange bond between you and your mouse, as well as with your classmates, who make for a motley crew, all working together in a creative environment.

Classes are held in a Thomastown warehouse where the walls are lined with a crazy assortment of animals, all beautifully preserved for collections, commission or sale.

Beginners classes run monthly, and there are plans for an intermediate course in 2015.

Next workshop: Sunday 16th November. 9am 7pm. Last class for 2014

Included: A full day of instruction by a knowledgeable teacher, all tools and materials, your own furry friend, lunch, constant cups of tea/coffee and a glass of champagne to finish.

Price: $500 plus $75 for optional take-home taxidermy kit.

You did a great job, well done. I thought it was an interesting invite when it came up but I wouldn't have had the stomach to use the scalpel :)
