Following its recent tour of the US, RESPECT: The Aretha Franklin Story is back by popular demand in Australia sharing the story of the life and music of the soul Queen, American singer, Aretha Franklin.

Australian soul vocalist and former Australian Idol performer, Angie Narayan, will return to lead the audience through the songs and significant moments in Aretha Franklin's life. Aretha Franklin has been described as a singer who defined the golden age of soul music of the 1960s. With hits like "You Make Me Feel Like (A Natural Woman)," "I Say A Little Prayer" and "Respect," Aretha sold more than 75 million songs worldwide and amassed a huge following in the process.

I asked Angie about the RESPECT show and the impact that Aretha has had on her.

Here's what she had to say:

How has Aretha influenced you as a singer and performer
There's no other 'Aretha' on the planet. She has been, and will always be, the greatest musical influence of my life. Her timing is like no other singer I've studied, and after learning Aretha's technique, every singer is now easy by comparison, which is why she is The Queen!

Aretha was described as having a "hurricane" of a voice and an attitude to match! For her time, she was an absolute trailblazer. She is really the "original Diva," and I believe that she paved the way forward for other greats like Mariah, Beyonce, and Whitney to come through.

What have you learnt most about Aretha by doing this show?
I learned that the Queen and I share a number of parallels, from our musical beginnings to our family connections despite being from opposite sides of the world and born in different eras. The show explores some of these parallels.

What can audiences expect from the show
The show is a wonderful trip down memory lane for anyone who is an Aretha fan. We start in the 1960s when Aretha 2019s career began and follow right through to a really special moment at the 1998 Grammys where our audience will get a wonderful surprise. The band and cast are absolutely world-class and audiences can expect to dance right out of their seats as the show goes on as we celebrate the queen of soul.

Keep an eye out for one of the shows near you.
