The Sunshine Coast Council are incredible with making sure our children are kept well and truly entertained, with very inexpensive, educational and creative workshops on our local fauna and flora, throughout the school holidays.
The Spring holidays are just around the corner and children will have the privilege of exploring the fascinating world of frogs and reptiles with the Reptile Scales and Tadpole Tales: Children's Holiday Programme. Between the 25 September and 5 October, children will be able to participate in workshops at the Arts and Ecology Centre at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens, focused on local amphibians and reptiles. Children love these workshops! Who wouldn't be keen to write their own reptile story, paint a frog, learn to etch their most favourite species or create their very own goanna screen-printed bag to take home! Sounds like school holiday heaven to me.

Imagine getting up close and personal with a goanna...Image: Sunshine Coast Council FB
I'm not sure how keen I am to get up close and personal with a goanna to touch its skin and long tail and I'm sure as heck not going to get close enough to try and determine what a goanna has for lunch.
But, that is what this workshop is all about. Grace McClymont from Red Ink Rodeo will guide students on how to draw a prowling goanna - and their lunch (not the children's lunch) - and to turn their artwork into a stencil for screen printing. Each participant will then print their hungry goanna onto a calico bag to take home. Please note: This workshop incurs a $5 material fee, which has already been included in the ticket price.
🐸 Wednesday 26 September Turtle Tales Age 5 - 8 years | 10.00am to 11.30am | $7.50
Who doesn't love turtles? Image: Sunshine Coast Council
Oh my gosh, who doesn't love turtles! Join Sunshine Coast author, Aleesah Darlison on an ocean-inspired escapade. Students will get to learn about what makes turtles so special, from the time they are born to the time that they make a crazy scramble to the ocean and beyond.
Aleesah will read her book, Emerald: The Green Turtle's Tale to participating students and then will go on to discuss the turtle's life cycle, the threats to their environment - we all know about plastic being so damaging to turtles - and what we can do to help protect and save these truly remarkable animals and their habitat. Children will then write a turtle-inspired haiku* poem and do a craft activity to make their very own baby turtle.
A haiku* is traditionally a Japanese poem consisting of three short lines that do not rhyme.
Crocodiles, lizards, snakes and turtles - Australia has the bragging rights to having them all! Participants get to choose a reptile to write a story about and become an author for the day. Aleesah Darlison, the award-winning Sunshine Coast author, will give you the 'scales and claws' on Aussie reptiles, and students will get to learn awesome facts about reptiles. How much fun will this be? Write and illustrate your very own picture book, before sharing it with the group.
🐸 Thursday 27 September Goombuckar the Frog Workshop #1, Age 5 - 15 years | 10.00am to 11.30am | $7.50
Workshop #2, Age 5 - 15 years | 12.30pm to 2.00pm | $7.50
I love stories like this! Goombuckar the Frog is a local indigenous story that has been passed down through generations of indigenous people and students will get to hear this very special story. After the story telling, children will get to make their very own frog puppet, with long jumping legs and big eyes for night-time vision. Every student will be able to take their frog home with them to remind them of the legend of Goombuckar the Frog.

Children will get to learn about these amazing creatures' habits and habitats; whether they are in abundance or rare; and the safety and risk associated with these creatures. All interesting 'stuff'.
