'Repose': Nudes & Still Lives by Keith Burt

One of my favourite local artists, Keith Burt, has a new exhibition of paintings opening Friday 6 July at Spiro Grace Art Rooms in Spring Hill.

Running until 28 July, the ' Repose ' exhibition will feature a series of studio nudes and still lives, captured in the rich, detailed oils that characterise Keith's work.

Flesh, a sheet, a Persian rug -- each gleams on the canvas, with carefully rendered light and shadow bringing them to life.

The chair theme from Keith's last show will also return, with empty bentwoods, benches and armchairs captured in loving detail.

These images are beautiful in themselves, but also seem to speak of presence and loss, conversation and departure.

Of the other paintings that I've seen, the nudes are lush, inviting and beautiful, but my personal favourite is 'Tarragh's hands' -- a portrait of the artist's wife's hands, calmly crossed.
