Explore the history of the Renmark Hotel
Renmark Township

Renmark is a township on the banks of the beautiful Murray River. It is about 254km northeast of Adelaide in the rural Riverland region.

The Renmark Hotel

In the heart of the city, located on Murray Avenue, stands the majestic Renmark Hotel. This hotel was established in 1897. Noted as the first community-owned hotel in the British Commonwealth, today it continues to be owned by the community of Renmark. Over the years, the hotel has undergone additions and refurbishments.

The Hotel was heritage listed in 1996 and now has a museum to showcase and celebrate its rich history.

The museum has a wide collection of photographs, memorabilia, furnishings, table settings and much more. It also has replicas of their early staff, like a 14-year-old hall porter in an old lift and a waitress in a dining setting.

There are also displays of many events that took place, stories and prominent visitors (including royalty) to the hotel.

The museum is located on the first floor of the hotel and is accessible by stairs in the main foyer or by lift. It is open daily from 9am to 5pm and there is no entry fee.

So next time, you are in Renmark, do pay a visit to this unique museum and learn about the rich history of this iconic hotel in the Riverland.
