Nat King Coles music touched a generation, his career changed the world and his influence lingers on.

Even if you're too young to know his face, you know his songs; Mona Lisa. Unforgettable, When I Fall In Love and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.

He started as a jazz pianist but it was his ballads that took the world by storm, he caressed lyrics, romanced a melody.
Cole was the first African American to host a TV but he fought racism all his life. In 1948, Cole purchased a house in the all-white neighbourhood of Los Angeles. The Ku Klux Klan placed a burning cross on his front lawn. In 1956, he was assaulted on stage in Birmingham, Alabama and later that year he was contracted to perform in Cuba at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, Havana, but was not allowed to stay because of his race. Cole honoured his contract, and the concert at the Tropicana became legendary.

It's hard to grasp the drama behind the smooth baritone, it seemed nothing could ruffle him; perhaps it's that cool nature that made his music magic.

In this long-awaited return to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Bert LaBonte guides us through the life and career of a true pioneer, embodying the man and spirit
