This year the
Relay For Life - Bellarine walk will be held on the 8th and 9th November at Collendina Recreation Reserve, Minerva Close, Ocean Grove.
Relay For Life is a great opportunity for people to get together to celebrate cancer survivors (the Survivors Lap), to remember people who have been taken by cancer and to fight back against cancer by raising funds for cancer research.
The overnight event for Relay For Life - Bellarine starts at 12.00pm Saturday and runs until 12.00pm Sunday. There are lots of fun things on during the event, free children's activities, live music - bands, solo artists, ceremonies and more.
Relay For Life is a year long fund raising activity that ends with the 24 hour Relay For Life event.
What is Relay For Life?
Relay for Life is a year long fund raising effort that culminates in a weekend event - aptly named "Relay For Life".
Teams of people, families, friends, neighbours, community groups, many different people from many different walks of life, can and do enrol a Team in the Relay For Life. The Teams spend the whole year fund raising, holding events like tin rattles, sausage sizzles, garage sales, trivia nights, cake sales, raffles, etc. You will find that most people who get involved in Relay For Life are affected by cancer in some way.
The weekend of the Relay For Life is a celebration of the year long fund raising effort by all the teams. Relay For Life is an overnight community fundraising walk. Teams of people set up tents around an oval (the oval where the event is being held obviously). People can camp overnight, with some people walking for the whole 24 hours of the event.
During the 24 hours, members of each team take turns walking around the track (oval). There is food available (food vans sell food during the event) and people bring their own food along. There is entertainment, games and activities during the event. It is a family friendly environment for the entire community to participate in.
As it's a team event, most teams have staggered walkers (not walkers staggering) on the oval at different times. Some teams set up a roster and people will walk around the oval, individually or with friends, for a few laps, or an hour or so, depending on their energy and other commitments. People are not required to be there for the whole event, or the entire time, however most people stay for the fun, and to support their friends and family, who are out walking for the team.
The funds raised for Relay For Life events truly make a difference in the fight against cancer. Just ask any one of the cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year.
The Relay For Life events run for 24 hours, and because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one person on the track at all times.
