1. Clean inside your house

Of course you always keep your home clean, but what's needed here is a deep clean. That means:

  • Cleaning your fridge inside and out and appropriately dealing with any expired products. Giving the oven a clean after all the yummy winter food you cooked in it over the last few months.
  • Cleaning your carpets either professionally, or DIY style
  • Dusting so that when the spring sun beams through your (clean) windows it doesn't highlight a layer of dust – so give your ceiling fans and light fittings a good going over too
  • Give your tiled floors and/or wooden floors some extra love and care
  • Give your air conditioner filters a clean. This makes them run more efficiently and will save you money.

  • 2. Clean outside your house

You don't want the first good weather weekend to be spoilt by having to clean your outdoor furniture before you can sit on it again or your barbecue before you can fire it up now do you? Similarly, get your outdoor pavers or deck in tip top shape now!

    3. Sort out yours and your family member's wardrobes and sell, donate or use as rags.

Look at your clothes, any winter clothes and shoes you haven't worn this winter it is fair to say you won't wear again. If they are in good condition, consider making a few dollars back by selling on ebay or Gumtree. Alternatively, donate to charity, swap with friends or if they are really too far gone, old clothes make great cleaning rags.

Anyone with kids knows that their wardrobes need constantly clearing out, so ditto above.

    4. Sort out your CDs, DVDs, books and sell or donate.

I know, I know, with the plethora of screening services out there, DVDs are, like so old school. But there are people out there who still love 'em so if you've finished with them, sell them or donate them. Ditto for CDs. As for books, good second hand books are still in demand. If you don't want to give them to friends or sell them, consider donating to a charity. The House of Books accepts donations.

    5. Exercise – it's not too late to get a summer ready body

As the saying goes, summer bodies are made in winter. But as all good personal trainers will tell you, it is never too late to start. Picture how fab you'll feel in your swimmers this summer when you put in a bit of effort now. The spring weather makes getting out for a walk, run or cycle so much more inviting. If the weather is still not great, make sure your gear is in tip top shape. There is nothing more frustrating than getting ready to go on a bike ride only to find you've got a flat tyre (or worse) to sort out before you can get going.

    6. Get out your calendar and start planning your spring barbecues etc.

People in Melbourne tend to hibernate over winter. The time has now come to get out your calendar, diary, smart phone, whatever and plan some catch ups with your friends. Why not have them over for a barbecue now that you've cleaned up your outdoor entertaining area?

    7. Get your garden sorted.

Spring is fabulous in the garden but you need to put in some preparation first. That means, pruning, mulching, weeding, and yes, some planting too for some tips see my article August Gardening Jobs .
