The 'Rege', as it's known by locals, is a friendly suburban watering hole in
Kingsford that draws an eclectic mix of students, young professionals and local drinkers. With the UNSW a block away, students make up a large proportion of the crowd and subsequently, the place buzzes every night. Add to that the pub's late, late opening hours and the Regent becomes a bit more exciting than your standard local.
Occupying a corner block fronting
Anzac Parade , the Regent houses two bars and a popular outdoor courtyard. A jukebox in the front bar becomes taken over by uni students most nights, who armed with their 'Rege cards', enjoy subsidised drink tariffs and imbibe accordingly. Out the back, the TAB area and 'gaming' room – read poker machine den - proves popular with punters, sports fans and grizzly-looking old men.
The drinks list is pretty standard and all the usual suspects are offered at the beer taps. There's a good selection of imported brews in the fridges, and all are priced fairly reasonably. The wine list is again nothing out of the ordinary, but the prices seem to veer a little cheaper than surrounding bars. Cocktails are also extremely well-priced, with many set at the $14 mark.
On the food side, the Regent's bistro specialises in good, no-fuss fare - think steaks, schnitzels and burgers. The prices are very student-friendly, especially if you buy a drink with your meal. Hambos, steaks sandwiches and pasta are great value at just under $11 with a drink purchase.
A revolving series of events take place at the Regent, ranging from trivia on Monday nights to karaoke on Thursday nights. Another promotion, 'The Sympathy Vote', promises a free middy for students who have just failed an assignment or suffered a similar set back during their studies. Sunday's drawcard of free pool and free use of the jukebox is also a crowd pleaser. Happy hour is daily from four to six – which is actually two hours - but who's counting?
So for those in the vicinity, the Regent ticks most of the boxes. The eclectic mix of patrons, reasonable prices and liberating opening hours, make it a good choice for those in the neighbourhood or those who like to kick on into the morning. That, and there will nearly always be a uni student in the front bar wearing preposterously skinny jeans who drinks too much and dances really badly. Priceless.
