To quote RCOA CEO Paul Power, 'This is a first for us', we've never done anything on this scale before, but wanted to amplify the very broad community support that exists in our country for people seeking safety, and to recognise the great contributions that refugees have made to our way of life. The Festival of Welcome will make this message loud and clear, and what better way to do that than through a united display of culture, food and music? With the election falling just days later, this event is a chance to show the great support in the community that exists for refugees'
This inaugural festival will be infused with an eclectic and inspiring line-up of entertainment on the main stage and some delicious global culinary delights at the street food market on site. There'll be face-painting, photo booths, inspirational speakers from refugee backgrounds and lots more, so make sure you come and celebrate the amazing contributions that refugees make to our communities.
A kaleidoscope of artists from refugee communities will be joined by some of Australia's top musical talents with MC Osamah Sami (award-winning actor, comedian, writer and former refugee) along with SBS's Santilla Chingaipe at the helm at this launch. You can expect to see the following artists, to name a few.
This day of warmth and compassion of so many Australians towards people seeking safety on our shores will take you all on a whirlwind tour of global harmonies and beats with the focus on the incredible musical heritage that refugee communities have brought to us. Add to it hosting chefs from Afghan, Tamil and Vietamese communities, be tempted and show up at 'The Square'. Stay in touch with the Refugee Council's Facebook and Facebook Event Page for updates.
