Finding freedom is the theme for 2023 Refugee Week . This year, Refugee Week will be celebrated from Sunday, 18 June until Saturday, 24 June 2023. During this week, some events will be held and coordinated by the Refugee Council of Australia to raise awareness about living without the fear of war, having basic human rights upheld, living in equality and without the fear of persecution are just some of the examples of what freedom can entail.

You can come and join some FREE community events below :

Refugee Week Film Screening - The Swimmers
The Summit Community Centre on 4 Crescent Drive Norton, Summit, will turn into a pop up movie theatre on Tuesday, 20 June 2023, starting from 1 pm to 3.30 pm, for a special screening of The Swimmers, a movie based on an incredible true story

This movie is about sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini that fled their home country of Syria in 2015 when their house was destroyed during the civil war. They journeyed to Lebanon and then onto Turkey where they arranged to be smuggled into Greece on a dinghy. However, the refugees were in the middle of the Aegean Sea when the engine of the overcrowded dinghy cut out and the pair, plus two others who could swim, were responsible for saving the lives of those on board. Just a year after their harrowing experience Yusra competed in two swimming events at the Rio Olympics as part of the Refugee Olympic team.
