Carrol Bryant, author of Children of Flower Power, once said "no matter how many plans you make or how much in control you are, life is always winging it".
So it was in this vein that I accepted a spontaneous invitation for breakfast yesterday morning.
Only ten minutes into the drive and a sign attracted our attention and diverted us off the main road to Redland Bay and the monthly market that takes place in the reserve next door to the Redland Bay Hotel, on Broadwater Terrace, Redland Bay.
Off street parking was not an issue as this is a small market created as a fundraising venture by The Lions Club of Redland Bay Victoria Point to support the local community.
Brisbane turned on a perfect Autumn day yesterday but I would recommend having something warm to wear on hand as the morning breeze coming off the bay can be cool.
It was this factor that determined our first port of call for the morning : the Redland Bay Men's Shed sausage sizzle. That's one way to combat the cold!
These markets commence at sunrise and generally pack up around 11am. The stalls set up around the perimeter of the reserve, with any spill setting up in the middle of the field. This means that it is an easy course to cover and many locals take their dogs for the stroll. It has that community feel.
Stallholders provide a wide variety of goods including:
fresh produce
books
household goods
plants
crafts
With warm bellies we were able to commence our search for a bargain or two. In less than hour we had purchased four home grown chokos, a novel for the coming week of train travel, three pre loved DVDs, two jigsaw puzzles, and my friend was thrilled to find a hardware stall because " you always need nuts and bolts". I'm sorry, I did not know....
My find for the morning was a local lass who makes her own candles and I don't hesitate suggesting you refer to her website - www.candlesforyoursenses.com.au.
Between us, we had spent less than $20.00 and had enjoyed a pleasant morning in the sun, chatting to some very friendly folk.....and their dogs.
To celebrate we headed back to The Men's Shed for another sausage.
The occur on the 2nd Sunday of each month, so the next will take place on Sunday, 14th June, 2015.
Entry is FREE which means there is no excuse not to have breakfast out to start the day.
Stalls are available for $10.00 on a first come basis. There is no need to book.
The Lions Club of Redland Bay Victoria Point will also collect donated household goods and clothing and are contactable on www.redviclions.myteamcaptain.com.
Winging it can certainly lead to a positive outcome !
