Get swept away
Up in the sky. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's the colourful kite kaleidoscope of one of Queensland's most popular festivals. Redcliffe KiteFest is returning for the weekend of 29 and 30 August with another swooping, spinning, high-flying display from some of the world's best kite flyers. It's the opening salvo in the huge Redcliffe Festival, which runs for two weeks from 29 August to 13 September.
An entry fee of $8 for adults, $5 for children and concession holders or $20 for a family ticket (two adults and two children or 1 adult and 3 children) will give you access to most of the action, with additional fees for extras like kite making workshops and the rides at KiteFest Karnival. The action runs from 9am to 4pm each day at Pelican Park, Hornibrook Esplanade, Clontarf. Tickets will only be available at the gate on the day.
Some of the professional kiting world's most renowned exponents will be strutting their stuff at this year's KiteFest. You can see stunt kite flying from the Phoenix Kite Collective, large-scale kite creations from Germany's Rolf Zimmerman, and designer kites from Malaysia's Leong Chee Wan. Local group, Redcliffe Kite Club will also appear. Displays from 9am to 3.30 pm each day.
If watching the masters and their amazing kites whets your appetite for sending your own creations into the sky, you can also learn how it's done at the Kite Making Workshops. For only $5, you can learn from the experts between 10am and 2pm each day near the entry gate. There is also a public kite flying area where you can dazzle other festival goers with your skills.
When all that looking up at the sky has given you a crick in the neck, turn to the KiteFest Main Stage for some great live performances by Jukebox Heroes, Hailey Calvert, The Walters, Faleepo Francisco and more. The kids can even enjoy that perennial favourite, Spongebob Squarepants, live at 1pm on both days. You can see the Main Stage program for both days here.
A water spectacular will have Bramble Bay sizzling with the Stars Down Under Water Ski Show. Their 45 minute show features all the thrills of acrobatics, barefoot skiing, wakeboarding, stunt skiing, and human pyramids. Best viewed from the ocean side of the kite oval, the skiers will perform at 10 am and 1.30 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
All the fun of the fair comes to Clontarf with KiteFest Karnival. The rides this year include Tiki Island Inflatable Activity Centre, El Toro Loco Mechanical Bull, Super Satellite, Tarantula, Super Sizzler, the Double Screamer Slide and many more. Tickets are $5 for single rides, $25 for an all day pass and will be available from the ticket booth on the day.
This area will present a range of entertainment and activities for children under 10, most of it FREE. They can try out the TeePee Musical Village, test their jumping mettle on the Springfree Trampolines, or let their creativity loose at the BrisBricks LEGO Workshop and Display. There are even market stalls for mums and dads to enjoy while the kids are expending their energy.
