Using only the power of the wind, a variety of creatures will soar, swoop and glide over the skies of Redcliffe on the weekend of 14 and 15 May. Redcliffe Kite Club's annual kite festival, Redcliffe Kitefest promises to be a feast for the eyes with hundreds of kites of all shapes, colours and sizes taking part.
Held on the beach at Pelican Park, Clontarf, Kitefest is not limited to string based wind powered crafts. Around noon on each day, the skies above will resonate with the sound of jet engines as YAK52 planes from Warbird Aviation perform aerobatics.
The Ultimate Kite Show will feature mega kites above the waters of Bramble Bay. Mega kites, which can be over 25 metres long, are powered by boats so a great show is possible in any wind condition.
Mikio Toki, a Japanese kite master will be attending as a special guest of the festival and he will host a 2 hour kite making workshop on Saturday afternoon.
The fun won't just be up in the air during Kitefest; you can also shop at a variety of market and craft stalls, take a turn on an amusement ride or enjoy a spot of wine tasting. If you're tempted to try flying a kite, you can purchase kites and fly them in the designated public flying area.
Food will be available on site from a variety of local outlets. If using public transport, catch the train to Sandgate and then jump on a Hornibrook bus line to Redcliffe.
