Before I spoke to Erin Kennedy of the Redcliffe Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, I kind of thought that Masonic organisations were like that episode of The Simpsons where Homer joins the 'Stonecutters' - furtive and shadowy, complete with secret handshakes.

Turns out, life is nothing like The Simpsons. Go figure.

There's nothing particularly secretive about an organisation that has its own website and Facebook page . And in the interest of promoting openness, and dispelling any rumours surrounding one of the world's largest fraternal organisation, the Redcliffe First Settlement Lodge would like to invite you to an Open Day to find out more about their organisations.

The Redcliffe chapter is on the hunt for new members and invites anyone who is interested to come along and see for themselves what Masonic membership entails. The Open Day, taking place on 25 August, includes a tour of the lodge, a chance to watch some of the proceedings, and afternoon tea. Attendance is free and does not require a booking.

[ADVERT]The Order of the Eastern Star exists to 'provide a means by which fraternal and community relationships can be encouraged and improved', according to their Mission Statement. This is conducted through fundraising, works of charity, providing support for members and non-members, and acting in a way that 'benefits the community'.

Men and women are welcome to join and approval is not conditional on legacy membership (i.e. you must be the child of a member) as it once was. There are two conditions though - all members must be over the age of 18, and must believe in a Supreme Being (it doesn't matter which one).

Masonic membership has many advantages, such as forming friendships and professional contacts. Anyone who is interested in joining or learning more is encouraged to attend.
