Fresh from the triumphant sell-out season of The Great Gatsby at The Space, Independent Theatre Australia is proud to their latest production - the Australian Premiere of Red Velvet by Lolita Chakrabarti.

This acclaimed play offers an intriguing biography of the 19th century actor Ira Aldridge and his taking of the role of Othello.

The play initially premiered in 2012 and starred English actor, director, and writer Adrian Lester as Aldridge.

The upcoming Independent Theatre production will star Shedrick Yarkpai in the central role. Yarkpai fittingly is the first African-born actor to play Othello in Australia.

The scene is set in the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. 1833. Edmund Kean, England's greatest actor, has collapsed on stage whilst playing Othello. The company faces ruin. The manager invites a brilliant young American actor called Ira Aldridge to take over the role. The company is saved.

The only problem is – he's black. It is unheard of – a black actor playing Othello! So, as the public riot in the streets over the abolition of slavery, how will the cast, critics and audience react to the revolution taking place in the theatre?

Directed by Rob Crosner, this forthcoming production will fascinate and intrigue audiences with its themes of intolerance and prejudice and satirical view of theatre and actors.

It's a powerful drama that is a must-see for all lovers of theatre.

Red Velvet will play at The Goodwood Institute for a strictly limited season from 20th to 28th November 2015:
