In a theatrical landscape awash with American scripts, it's refreshing to find the work of an award-winning Australian playwright take to the stage. Such is the case with Tom Holloway's
Red Sky Morning , being brought to life by
Room to Play Productions , an independent theatre group based in Brisbane.
And the setting for Holloway's 2008 work, described as play of the year by
The Sunday Age when first produced by
Red Stitch in Melbourne, couldn't be more atmospheric.
Red Sky Morning will be staged at the historic 1930's Paddington Substation, one of Brisbane's few remaining interwar tramway substations.
Red Sky Morning throws a spotlight on a conflicted family living in regional Australia. 'Man' (Joss McWilliam) and 'Woman' (Elise Greig) are craving to reconnect amid the pressures of everyday life, while 'Girl' (Madison Kennedy-Tucker) is fantasising about her first love. Holloway creates the tale via three entwined monologues which reveal the characters' inner thoughts and yearnings.
Room to Play Productions founder and director Heidi Manche says the play is one in which the desire to be heard amidst the cacophony of noise inside and outside our heads runs deep. 'The intimacy of the venue provides the perfect setting to share this Australian story,' she says.'
Red Sky Morning is a tale of the everyday, where moments are missed, desires thwarted, love goes unrecognised, and intentions are miscommunicated. It is lyrically, rhythmically and humorously told.'
The Room to Play Productions team also includes Desley Munck (designer) and Mikaela Hollonds (producer).
