Many voices, one desire.%%
Up close and personal with an Aussie family. It could be yours.
A desire to love and be loved. A regional Australian husband and wife crave to connect amidst the daily routine of family life. We are given an intimate glimpse into the passionate private thoughts and unspoken desires of a couple aching to connect despite the mundane nature of routine life. Their teenage daughter whose emerging sexuality has her fantasising of her first love amidst the dysfunction of her parent's impotent efforts to bring their hearts together.
Directed by Beth Child, this ensemble production starring three talented Brisbane actors is described as an "intimate, raw and deeply human play", with each of the actor's performances interacting with and complementing each other.
As fascinating as these characters are, it's edifying to learn a little of the cast and crew behind them.
Beth Child, Director
Beth began as a professional actor onstage with STC, MTC, QTC, Chamber Made, Griffin, La Boite and La Mama; on TV, from
Neighbours to
Janus, in films (
A Cry in the Dark,
My Brilliant Career, and
The Everlasting Secret Family among many), plus extensive cabaret and musical theatre, both as devisor/performer and director.
She was text trainee / Assistant Director to Tina Packer at Shakespeare & Company in Massachusetts which led to playing Prospero in
The Tempest, and directing and teaching at the University of South Carolina Upstate.
She began directing professionally in 1992, everything from cabaret to Shakespeare to short films. In 2007 and 2009 she directed
Macbeth the Contemporary Rock Opera at St Martins, and QPAC.
In 2016 she edited and directed readings of nine Shakespeare plays for 4MBS-FM's Sixty Minute Shakespeare season, and now she is concurrently directing
Putnam County Spelling Bee for PRIMA and Tom Holloway's
Red Sky Morning for Room to Play.
Heidi Manché (
Woman)
Working with a small intimate cast roster is a recurring trait in Manché's career. Having established Brisbane Youth Theatre, a boutique youth theatre in Paddington, Manché explains that "working with a small cast allows a greater intimacy with the actors, and provides advantages of understanding the actors' personal lives and being able to access examples of stories from their own lives that they can bring to the text."
The end result is an environment where the audience is a much a part of the story: "Our audiences are very special, in fact, we don't exist without them," Manché says, "Theatre offers one of the few intense, visceral experiences in a world dominated by digital entertainment."
Wayne Bassett (
Man)
Wayne Bassett describes himself as having excellent comic timing, and a knack for bringing to life troubled and conflicted characters. Originally from Sydney, he draws on his experiences in both his day job as a disability support worker, working with mentally ill clients and extensive medical role-play work with UQ, Griffith Uni, and the Australian Medical Council.
Of Red Sky Morning Wayne says "The play's written in such a unique way, with so much that we, sadly, can all relate to. If only I had a bigger brain!"
Madison Kennedy-Tucker (
Girl)
Madison Kennedy-Tucker is currently studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drama) at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Her recent credits include
Player 2 directed by Kristen Maloney at Melbourne Fringe, as well as
Lunchbreak directed by Gabriella Flowers, and
Sshhh directed by Sam Bull, both which premiered at Short Sweet Festival 2016. Additionally, she was in Flowers Theatre Company production of
The Train Tea Society in Anywhere Theatre Festival 2016. Her other credits include
Return to Earth directed by Leon Cain,
