The Salvation Army's major fundraising effort, the Red Shield Appeal is back in 2020 to raise funds to support vulnerable Australians in crisis. While normally volunteers knock on the doors of Australian households, this year the appeal is all
online to recognise social distancing restrictions. Look out for their digital doorknock efforts.
The Red Shield Appeal runs over the months of April, May and June each year,,
Funds raised from the appeals are used to help the Salvation Army provide their valuable services to those in the community needing a helping hand.
What is the Salvation Army?
The Salvation Army is both a church and a charity, caring for people, creating faith pathways, building healthy communities and working for justice. It was created on July 2, 1865, when a Methodist minister commenced work in East London. The Salvation Army's beginnings in Australia in 1883 were to assist discharged prisoners.
Today, the Army's services span across homelessness, assisting families in crisis through practical support and financial counselling, guiding people with addictions and helping those experiencing the financial, social and emotional repercussions of COVID-19.
How you can give to the Appeal
There are a couple of ways you can get involved:
• You can donate directly.
• Start a digital doorknock and start your own fundraising page.
• Find a local Salvation Army group in your local area to support.
The Red Shield Appeal has been running since 1965 and is recognised by the Salvation Army's branded symbol – the red shield.
