Surveyed in 1838, Marion is one of South Australia's oldest colonially-settled areas. It has a long and rich heritage with many historic buildings to discover. One such building is the Red House located at 245 Sturt Road.

Built in 1922, the Red House was originally the family home of Marion market-gardener Walter and Ida Phelps. Walter grew apple cucumbers and grapes among other produce while Ida actively involved herself in the community working on the local Red Cross, playing piano at the local hall and handing out presents at Christmas time. In this red-brick bungalow, they lived a simple rural life with children Nancy and Colin.

When Colin left the home in 1977, the Red House became an arts and crafts gallery where local artists held workshops, sold artworks and staged exhibitions. This venture saved the cottage from being demolished. Although two small portions of wall were knocked out, many of its character structures and features had been retained.

After eight years, the Red House Art Group relocated and the Marion Heritage Research Centre took over the premises. The little old red house is now the focal point for Marion's history and cultural heritage. Its front two bedrooms, lounge and kitchen have been converted into a workspace, library and meeting room. Photographs and artefacts related to the Phelps family home can be seen around the house.

2022 marks 100 years of the Red House at Sturt and it is hoped that this favourite Marion landmark will continue to stand for many more years to come. The centre is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am to 4pm. Do call 7420 6455 or email [email protected] to make an appointment for a visit.
