I might be a little late getting on board with this amazing Australian film. The cold weather pushed me into the warmth of bedroom and several woolly blankets with DVDs as my best source of entertainment (while not moving and letting the heat out!). Finally I experienced Red Dog.
I'm a fan of Australian films in general because they tend to stay away from Hollywood glamour and tell a truly honest story; this is exactly how I felt about Red Dog.
Directed by Kriv Stenders and starring Josh Lucas, Rachael Taylor and Noah Taylor, this film tells the story of an intelligent and people-loving, hitch-hiking Kelpie who became a communal pet and faithful companion for the mining town of Dampier.
I don't want to give any more away because the journey is unbelievable, and made even more incredible by the fact it's a true story. The real Red Dog made headlines wandering across the country.
In real Aussie fashion, this film is hilarious in its portrayal of people, devastating in its honesty of relationships and showing the effects of heartbreak.
Suitable for most ages, although it might be a little sad for the kids. Prepare to laugh, grab the tissues for when you cry and watch Red Dog on the next cold, cold night.
