Many people my age steer clear of home-grown cinema, so I was a little sceptical when I was invited along to watch Red Dog with my family, but decided to give it a go. When I entered the cinema I saw a host of families and elderly couples, which was not necessarily a deterrent, I am not so difficult to please. But that may give an idea of the intended audience for such a film.
The story follows a dog, Red Dog in fact, so named because when he was found and driven in the back of a Ute by some of his soon-to-be owners he received a coat full of outback dust making him look a little ridiculous. Once he arrives in the small mining town of Dampier, Red Dog proceeds to win the affection of all the townsfolk. This unusual dog is capable of anything, from saving lives to hitchhiking to providing 'someone' to talk to. The story is narrated by the central characters, as they share their anecdotes of the dog and how he came to be famous throughout the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
Starring a number of well known Australian actors and actresses, including Rachael Hunter, Noah Taylor and Kiwi Keisha Castle-Hughes, you would expect great things of the film. However, I found it fairly disappointing. There was not anything in particular wrong with it, it just lacked believability, which is slightly absurd given it is based on a true story. The insincerity was largely due to the overacting; none of the actors delivered their best performances. In saying that, I did hear the children in the audience laughing repeatedly, so maybe I am simply the wrong age to appreciate it.
