Awhile back we visited Red Bay Brewery in Cleveland and my husband tried one of their tasting paddles. While I tried a few of the meads and decided to take home four different flavours.
The Brewery is located in a warehouse and the décor is very minimalist and in need of a makeover. It's what I imagine a man's cave would look like in he was on a budget. I was surprised to learn the small scale craft brewery had been there for several years. Sadly, we weren't allowed to take photos.
My husband liked the Bearded Hobo beer the best but said it was quite yeasty. This pale ale recalls the owner's childhood memories of brewing beer with his father. It has passionfruit and hop flavours.
I tried two different meads and two different ciders. My favourite drink was the Love Potion. It's a lemon and mixed berry flavour which will appeal mostly to females as it is sweat. The lemons are grown in Queensland to produce an alcoholic lemonade which is a thirst quencher.
The Cloudy Head Apple Cider was my second favourite drink of the ones I tried. It tastes exactly like homemade apple pie, which is doughy and cinnamony. The apple cider is a dry draught style cider with clean and crisp flavours.
The Electric Lemonade was way too tart. I love lemon even if it is tart, but I was not a fan of this one. My husband thought it was yeasty, like their beers. Again the lemons are grown in Queensland and this one is an alcoholic lemonade for grown-ups.
The Cloudy Head Pear Cider I can only describe as mild mannered. This mead has a well-rounded fresh pear taste with no frills. It is a dry draught styled cider with a clean and crisp flavour.
If you are in the Clevelend neighbourhood, you might like to pop in to Red Bay Brewery for a tasting paddle and take home some preservative and chemical free beer, cider or meads.
