Since the early 20th century, sculptors have been creating art from repurposed objects.
Brisbane City Council in partnership with
Endeavour Foundation are encouraging that tradition with the
Recycling Art Competition .
The competition doesn't just give artists the chance to walk away with a share of $4,000 in prize money, it also encourages them to explore the creative potential of recycling household items and furniture. The hope is that it will inspire people viewing the work to see the possibility in things that may have otherwise have been thrown away.

The Recycling Art Competition also serves to raise awareness of the great finds available at Brisbane City Council Tip Shops. The shops boast products salvaged from council transfer stations, including books, household furnishings, toys, sporting goods and collectable items.
The finalists' works have now been chosen and are on display for free at the Brisbane Square Library. The public is invited to view the works and vote for their favourite at the competition website. Last year's competition saw more than 2000 community votes through the tip shops, Brisbane Square Library exhibition and Council's Facebook page.
