Following on from the last column, it is still February and, in Australia, that means we are at the end of summer, and this is when we see an awful lot of sunshine. As such, I have decided to do a series of columns involving the sun because, somehow, over the past few years, that hasn't come up in my musical columns.

Therefore, here is the second in a series of columns related to the sun!

After early songs about the sun , these is more recent songs, from 1990 onwards. Just as a reminder, there will be songs about sunshine, and songs about sunset and sunrise to come, so those will be missing from this list.

Normal rules – one song per artist, one version of each song and I need to like the song. What I decided was that these rules would cover the early songs list and this list both together, so there will be no cover versions of songs from the previous list, and no artists making a return appearance. And with that in mind, here's songs released since 1990 about the sun and things being sunny.
'A Thousand Suns' by Russell Morris (1991)

Most people think Morris' career ended in the 1970s, but he has continued to release some really strong albums over the years. This track is a mellow, relaxed piece in its styling, and is one of many good ones from this time.
'Distant Sun' by Crowded House (1993)

One of the many Crowded House songs that have gone down as classics, this track is a great showcase for every element of the band.
'Black Hole Sun' by Soundgarden (1994)

Hailing from the same region of the USA as Nirvana, Soundgarden were also there in the alternative music scene. This is probably their best-known track and one of their best as well.
'Sunchyme' by Dario G (1997)

This one might be a little cheat, but I really like this track, taking a refrain from 'Life In A Northern Town' (by Dream Academy) and turning it into such a wonderful 1990s dance track.
'Walkin' On The Sun' by Smash Mouth (1997)

Smash Mouth's debut single, most of us thought this song would be the start of something big. Maybe it didn't turn out that way, but this song is still a great bit of pop-rock from the end of the twentieth century.
'Feel The Sun' by Melanie C (1999)

Okay, I was not a huge fan of the Spice Girls, liking maybe 3 or 4 of their songs, but as solo artists, I have found that a lot of Melanie C's (Melanie Chisholm) solo work has been decent, and this is a good example of her balladeering side.
'Melting In The Sun' by Electric Light Orchestra (2001)

Zoom is an album not known by many, but I think it is one of the more consistent ELO albums. This track has all the ELO hallmarks and stands as a decent piece of pop-rock.
'Waitin' On A Sunny Day' by Bruce Springsteen (2002)

The Rising was one of Springsteen's finest albums of the 2000s, his response to the attacks of September 11, 2001, and every song on it stands as a decent track. This one is one of the more popular from that collection, and deservedly so – it is a song of hope in the face of something bad.
'Setting Sun (Forever Young)' by Eskimo Joe (2006)

This album cut from Australia's Eskimo Joe is a slower track from the band, and I'd forgotten about it until I was collating this list and it just sat with me. Decent hidden gem.
'The Sun Will Rise' by Kelly Clarkson feat. Kara DioGuardi (2011)

Again, I am not a huge fan of Kelly Clarkson, but I was given her first two albums and there were some songs I found that were surprisingly good, and this is, indeed, one of them. It is another song of optimism.
'Straight Through The Sun' by Spiderbait (2013)

Spiderbait is often at its best when Kram just lets loose on the drums, and this track is a great example of that. I am an unabashed fan of the band – seen them live quite a few times – and I'll take any excuse to include one of their songs. Like this.
'Hotter Than The Sun' by Magic Bones (2017)

I bought this song on CD single because of that amazing, pounding bass line, it sounded different to everything else in music at the time. I know nothing about the band, but this is a great track.
'Sun Shines Gray' by Steve Perry (2018)

Traces was a great album, a comeback that was so good to hear. This is a decent rocker from that album, an album filled with great songs.
'Omega – Sovereign Of the Sun Spheres' by Epica (2021)

Some symphonic hard rock here because I love symphonic rock and Epica is one of the best at it out there. This track is a long one, but listening to it, it goes through so quickly. Such great music.
'The Waning Of The Sun' by Liz Stringer (2021)

One of my favourite songs from First Time Really Feeling , this showcases Stringer's voice and the addition of the choir at the end lifts it.
'Silver Sun Bohemian' by Racing Birds (2022)

I really liked the Lonesome Blue EP , and this song has one of the best lines I have heard in music. This is such a great way to finish this list of sun songs.
Anyway, that's this list – sixteen songs from the last 33 years about the sun. Again, I hope you found something here to enjoy.
