The fifth and final column a topic that is probably starting to wear a little thin by about now. But the music has been different and ever-changing, so I hope this one maintains the enjoyment factor for readers.

The moon, that large natural satellite that circles the Earth, has been a main source of poetry and song for millennia, dating back to the Babylonians. It has been visited less often by humans than we would have thought considering the moon landing in 1969, but I still have hopes in my lifetime I will see more people stepping on its barren surface, and be filled with a sense of wonder.

There are so many songs about the moon! Without exaggeration, I have hundreds in my collection. And so that is why this list was so hard to compile. Trying to work out what to remove, what misses out, etc. As such, here are some rules:
1) No classical music. Sorry. There are some fine pieces, but this was already hard enough.
2) No repeats of songs across columns except where the cover version is very different in tone and form.
3) No repeated artists in an individual list.
4) The word moon must be in the title on some form.
5) Moonshine songs about alcohol do not count here (but a series of alcohol columns is coming at some point).

So we have come to the 2000s and a lot more country, symphonic rock, dance, pop, rock and everything else. An even more eclectic mixture of songs, this is possibly the list with the most songs people will not know straight away, which is odd considering how recent these tracks are. But I hope you will enjoy it anyway.
'Can't Fight The Moonlight' by LeAnn Rimes (2000)

Let's start with a bit of modern country-pop from LeAnn Rimes, who I quite like as an artist and who appeared in the last column as well. A gentle track that bops along quite nicely and was reasonably successful, this also shows how well Rimes can sing.
'Dancing In The Moonlight' by Toploader (2000)

While doing research for this, I discovered this was a cover version of a song from the 1970s by a band called King Harvest which I have not heard. But this version is so good, and for a while in this time period you could not escape it. I grew sick of it back then, but with the value of hindsight, it is a fun little pop song.
'High Moon' by Star One (2002)

Space Metal is the name of the album, and I was given a copy by a friend for whatever reason (I think he hated it but reasoned I'd like it). It's actually some fun prog rock, and this song is a great one from a fine collection.
'Virginia Moon' by Foo Fighters with Norah Jones (2005)

When I got this album, this track surprised me. The band decided to eschew their more rocking ways and match the jazz influences of Jones, creating a song that does not sound like Foo Fighters and yet is really, really good.
'Moonlight And Madness' by Trans-Siberian Orchestra (2009)

Symphonic rock, by one of the better known bands in the genre. This is an amazing track; just listen to that piano playing throughout! The music is based on pieces by both Beethoven and Chopin, and this is just a wonderful track. And I'll say it again – that piano playing!
'Prodigal Moon' by Spinoza Gambit (2010)

I was introduced to Spinoza Gambit's album Wayward & Upward last year when I entered a writing contest based on the music (I didn't place), and I fell for the music straight away. Experimental keyboards and swirling instrumentation – it is strange but mesmerising.
'Amsterdam Moon' by The Mavericks (2013)

This is one of those songs I am not sure which genre to slot it into. Is it country, zydeco, throw-back rock, something else? But I guess it doesn't matter when the song is this catchy.
'Bad Moon Rising' by John Fogerty and The Zac Brown Band (2013)

In 2013, John Fogerty re-recorded a bunch of his songs with modern artists and the results are amazing. This is the third time in these lists this song has come up, and this time it's done in a country style, maybe close to the Creedence original, but different enough for me, and it still works, showing how great the song itself is.
'Moonlight Motel' by Bruce Springsteen (2019)

From the album Western Stars , when I reviewed that album I said it was my favourite track on it, and that still stands to this day. It is a sad song but there is a definite hint of hope about it. So good.
'The Power Of The Moon' by Deep Purple (2020)

From the album Whoosh! , I like this track, especially the guitar solo in the middle. Deep Purple were well into their fiftieth year as a band by this time, and the album was a pleasant surprise to me when I heard it. And this is a fine way to close out moon songs.
And so we finish with an even ten recent songs about the moon. A fun mix of music to close out this series of columns, giving us more than 50 songs in total about Earth's natural satellite. At the very least, I hope you enjoyed the fifth instalment!
