From the 1990s to today, friends are still sung about
After looking at the 1960s and 1970s and then the 1980s and their songs about friends, it's time to bring the list up to now and look at more recent songs that involve friendship.
As I explained in the other columns, even though getting on in years, I feel like I have actually made friends for the first time in a long time recently. It does get harder as you get older, and I have found that out, but all is getting better. I hope.
Just to set things out like I have already done, I have avoided songs about a best friend's partner but apart from that, the songs are about friends and friendship; not all are positive, but friendship is the key. And to help me keep numbers under control, the word "friend" has to be in the title.
So, the third list is what I'll refer to as my "adult list", though that term is subjective. This covers the 1990s until the 2010s, so a few decades, and the list is 10 songs long. There were not as many as the other lists, but some still missed the cut (sorry, Foo Fighters) so feel free to add your own to the comments section below. One song per artist, I need to like the song, normal rules apply.
Songs about friends, the third and final list!
'Friends In Low Places' by Garth Brooks (1990)
One of Garth Brooks' early singles, celebrating friends from all walks of life who help him get over a broken heart, had the sort of lyrical ideas that would later be taken to the fullest in bro-country. I have to admit, when I first heard it, I wasn't sure what to make of it, but I do enjoy a lot of Brooks' work.
'To Find A Friend' by Tom Petty (1994)
A song about how hard it is to find a friend and how people's lives don't go the way they hope, but it is really made by Petty's magnificent voice and the magnificent music. Sounds jaunty, but it's sadly depressing.
'Old Friends' by Roger Taylor (1994)
From the Happiness? album, this song is a tribute to Queen band-mate Freddie Mercury, a friend he clearly misses. It's got a laid-back feel, like he's waiting in a lounge bar somewhere. Knowing the back story makes it a little sadder, but it is a celebration.
'My Friends' by Red Hot Chili Peppers (1995)
An early Peppers song, a ballad, and one of their more beloved songs. This is about sharing some not so good times with your friends, but it showed at the time it came out that this band was a definite force to be reckoned with.
'My Friend' by Alex Lloyd (2002)
It's the guitars that make this song for me. It's not that they're flashy or anything, just that I like the way they sound and mesh with Lloyd's voice. I don't think it was released as a single, but I quite like it anyway.
'We Used To Be Friends' by The Dandy Warhols (2003)
Yet another of the great songs by The Dandy Warhols to appear in one of these lists. I really like the music they put out, and this is one of their better-known songs, for good reason. Another song about friendship gone bad, but it is really, really good.
'Friends To Go' by Paul McCartney (2005)
From the album Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, loved by critics and fans, but forgotten by the public, this track with its simple musicianship (like McCartney III, he played all the instruments himself), is dedicated to Beatles band-mate George Harrison, making it the second track here dedicated to a dead band-mate. Strange lyrically, but it is a good song.
'Got You As A Friend' by Jimmy Barnes and Diesel (2005)
From Double Happiness, this is a semi-acoustic rocker between the brothers-in-law that sounds like, yes, they are also friends. The whole double Barnesy album set is great, but of the new songs on it, this is a definite highlight.
'Fast Friends' by Paul Dempsey (2009)
I admit, when I first heard this track, I thought Dempsey was trying to be Paul McCartney. But the song grew on me and I came to enjoy it. It's apparently about how sometimes you get stuck at a party where everyone wants to be your friend but it's all a façade. Fair enough.
'My Friend' by Jacques Houdek (2017)
And we finish with a song from the Eurovision song contest. While not one of my very favourite Euro songs, it is definitely one of the better ones from 2017. I love the neo-classical feel and the gradual build-up, the way he shifts voice is stunning, and when he sings in that tenor's voice it is amazing and goose-pimple inducing. The fact I don't understand half of it doesn't matter – great track.
That's the end of the last list of friends and friendship songs. Hopefully, over the three columns, you have found something you like and have gotten into. And, in case you need reminding, tell your friends that they mean something to you today. Don't wait, just do it.
Friends are the glue that hold life together, and being lonely is no fun. Unfortunately, I know that all too well. So, celebrate your friends, sing along to any of the 34 (33) songs I've presented with them and let your friendships be a positive.
Hope you enjoyed this column series, my online friends!
