Changing the way you think about 'rubbish'
My boyfriend has decided I'm a hoarder. There may be some element of truth to this, but I prefer the title 'recycler/reuser' rather than hoarder. I don't like to throw things out that can be used for 'something'.
If, like me, you're passionate about recycling and before you throw an object into your recycling bucket you think to yourself 'can I reuse this?' then here is an exhibition sure to flip your (recycle bin) lid; REmida REBOOT! Member's Exhibition.
Baskets made from tarp, canvas, metal and tape - creative thinking!
So far my creativity only extends as far as reusing jars for spices, pantry goods or making preserves; wine bottles for vases; jars for mini pot plants; and plastic vitamin containers for sewing paraphernalia. My boyfriend hates that I have all of these 'things' taking up room in our already cramped house for use 'one day' and I dare say if I don't think of some way to use them soon, they'll be heading to the recycling factory before our next move.
So I was very excited to find out about REBOOT! - an eclectic display by people far more artistic than myself, reinventing the purpose of discarded objects. Coinciding with National Recycling Week, REBOOT! celebrates and promotes the possibilities of creative reuse.
At the REEBOOT! exhibition you'll be privy to refashioned jewellery, sculptures, textiles, installations and much more. The list goes on and the options for creative inspiration are endless.
REmida Creative Reuse Centre, collects discarded materials from local businesses around Perth and makes them available to artists, schools, child care centres and families to develop creative new uses for them. Each artwork in the REBoot! exhibition is created from the massive supply of discards at REmida.
The mind boggles - loads of bits and pieces for reuse!
REmida's mission is to inform and influence the public opinion of 'waste' in Western Australia, to encouraging people to see the potential to re-purpose items and reassess what is infact 'waste' and what is not.
Opening night 6-8pm Thursday 14th November 2013 at REmida Art Space in West Perth. The exhibition will run until 30th November.
For more information, head to the website or see if for yourself at REmida Creative Reuse Centre on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons.
