Feel like a new challenge? Keen to try something different? Pick up a new skill? Real Adventure Women (RAW) is an activity initiative of Brisbane Council for women aged 16 and over to undertake experiences under expert guidance. That is good to know if you take a tandem skydive. The person on your back is not just someone doing RAW. They are trained.

As someone who used to be very involved with RAW activities, I personally think the program has gone flaccid and many, many of the activities I have undertaken have vanished. Perhaps, it's work place health and safety restrictions or insurance issues in an increasingly litigious society copying America.

But honestly, previously there was a magical, masculine range of vast activities. There was 'Women on Water', 'Women in the Air', 'Women on the Land' and 'Women take Aim'. I flew a plane, glided, Swung on a trapeze, did a sensual aerial dance and danced with hoops. I abseilled, I rock climbed. I rode horses, went four wheel driving, I strapped on quivers and bullet belts and I shot arrows at targets and fired a multitude of varying velocity firearms. I grew hair on my chest.

Looking at the current, starved program, I had that desolate feeling I experience when I get to the markets late, miss out on fresh produce and everything is dismantling around me to the sound of a lone busker.

The activities were also subsidised and were great value. That's how I could afford to fly planes, that's why I know how to take off.
Cost cutting and cut backs. Don't you just hate it when they impact upon and restrict the horizons of your existence?Particularly, if you are a person who thrives on possibilities and challenge?

I'll mention a true and interesting anatomical fact here. Look at your hand. In men the ring finger is longer than the index (pointer) finger. In women it is reversed. Rarely, a female has the digital status of a man. I do. The obstetric explanation is that she (I) was exposed to high levels of testosterone in the uterus.
Don't ask me how. I'm just thankful my finger is my only manly manifestation. I'm a feminine woman. I've been a dancer. However, these women are drawn to masculine activities and sports. That explains my CV of extreme sports, why I like fast cars and motor bikes and why I played basketball and cricket competitively and not netball and shuttlecock.

Take a look at the RAW program. I may have a biased, manly view. The only thing I'm going to do again is shoot. There is sailing, cycling and paddling. Done it. The activity which is offered most frequently is boxing, boxing, boxing. It doesn't appeal. My father was a boxer and as a little girl I had boxing lessons with my brothers. Good luck with RAW.
