There must be something in the R&B waters lately. Off the back of my interview with upcoming Australian R&B powerhouse Julian Simonsz, I recently connected with an emerging New York R&B pop sensation. Tanille Edwards. This 20-something children's book writer and singer\songwriter is taking to the charts in the States, with her new release 'Baby Come Back to Me'. Singing and performing since she was three years old, she explained "I used to put on shows for guests when they came over to our house. I think what really made me want to pursue it with passion, was when I started songwriting in my late teens. It felt so real and cathartic. I like the connection and expression it allows me."
Edwards holds a humility and grace that is beyond her youthful years, she feels grounded in the music she is producing and it shows. Being able to touch lives through her songs is her driving force. "It is important to get the message [songs] across. I respect the creative aspect of being able to communicate that way and let my voice tell the story." She laughs and explains further, "my parents did a good job, my mother was obsessed with music!" With musical influences stemming to Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and jazz great Ella Scott Fitzgerald, this young songstress is really creating waves.
Not only has she been writing books and music since was 16 years old, she earned an MBA from Adelphi University at 21 magna cum laude (graduated with honours). It's an impressive trajectory, and showcased through the relentless passion she has for treating her music and writing as a business, and getting it out there. When asked if she has experienced any challenges so far – she carefully explains, "I think my biggest challenge so far is getting heard in meaningful ways and growing my audience." As an Indie artist she explains, It's always tough, I am so thankful for the love and support I've been shown and slowly this challenge is becoming less of a challenge and more of a motivator."
Tanille's voice and lyrics brings back the memories of the R&B greats. Baby Come Back To Me is her latest single and the song is sure to rock 2014 and beyond. The song has the distinctive 80's inspired electro backing track, a style Edwards seems to be finding very comfortable and she is really getting famous for it. I'm fan of her song, 'It's Not Okay' (off the Broken soundtrack – Broken is a romance novel, featuring her songs), which there is a sequel to. "I am currently working on new songs for the Broken 2 Soundtrack. I have a remix I recently wrote to my upcoming song It's Not Okay. I am really looking forward to that. I also have a holiday song I am working on as a first for 2015 release." She reveals it's been a fun experience on this, and still has her "signature love spin!"
