This event is part of the Lord Mayor's Writers in Residence series. It's on Wednesday 20 June from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Brisbane City Hall's Main Auditorium at 64 Adelaide Street in George Square. The Writers in Residence usually have their talks and book signings in The BCC City Library and in suburban libraries. It is an indication how popular this event will be by holding it in the huge and beautiful city hall. Books will be available for purchase on the night, from Dymocks, or bring your own copy for REF (as he is affectionately known) to sign.

Swordplay goes Hand in Hand with REF (image by May Cross)

REF, from California, draws inevitable comparisons with Game of Thrones author George R R Martin. Same genre - fantasy. Similar setting - medieval world with nobles and knights, horses, swords, bows, and armour. Similar themes - power struggles and good versus evil. They both have unusual people and fantastical beasts: think dwarves. elves, dragons and other mythical creatures. It can be argued that Martin is more sexy and has more dialogue compared with Feist's descriptive writing. But the real difference is that Feist's fans adore him; whereas Martin receives hate mail from this legion of "fans" who call him lazy and tell him to stop touring and get writing!

King of Ashes is his first novel in the Firemane series. In a new world ravaged by war, readers will meet four young heroes. Declan is an apprentice blacksmith who has three side-kicks, or friends. And they know about espionage, assassination and weaponry. They are caught up in a web of lies, betrayal, love and danger, and an ancient prophecy about an heir to the deadly Firemane magic.

This event is presented in partnership with Supanova Comic Con and Gaming, Bookings are essential. Phone Brisbane Square Library on 07 3403 4166 to reserve your place. For further details click here.
