I never actually discovered Raw Energy - although I easily could have. Their five prime Sunshine Coast locations and bright funky colours are hard to miss. Instead Raw Energy was the cafe of choice for my vegetarian and health conscious friend when meeting for lunch one day and I needn't have been worried because in this instance 'healthy' didn't mean I had to forgo tasty.
A Sunshine Coast institution with their eye on the rest of the nation, Raw Energy has been serving up quality burgers, wraps, sandwiches and juices and much more since 1998. Since humble beginnings it has expanding operations to 5 locations around the coast, including those just off the beach-front at Noosaville, Caloundra and Mooloolaba making it the ideal pit stop after working up an appetite from the early morning jog or paddle in the surf.
And while the scale of operations has increased, the focus of the cafe's menu remains the same. Like the namesake suggests Raw Energy sets its attention on raw and fresh ingredients, so you can forget the fry and enjoy most of the ingredients as nature intended - fresh from the farm and without additives. If the vibe sounds all a little 'alternative' and 'new age', you are not far off the mark since Raw Energy has a distinct bohemian flavour in its decorations and wall posters, but manages this with natural flair and without it feeling contrived. Perhaps the staff conveyed this mood the most effectively with all of them cultured-looking individuals with breezy and carefree, yet friendly demeanours.
My most recent visit to Raw coincided with lunch hour and although breakfast is served all-day, I was keen to try some of their lunch time offerings, namely the chicken, brie and avocado wrap. I've long known of the happy relationship between chicken and avocado however when brie, aoli, fresh honey mustard dressing and crisp cos lettuce are added to the picture, then you have not just a perfect pairing of ingredients but a culmination of flavours doing a happy dance on your tastebuds all at once.
All wrapped up in garlic roasted lavash bread, the wrap was simply served but remarkably tasty and filling. My dining partner could barely finish his 'salad galore' sandwich which was so galore, that it had to be pinned together with a skewer to prevent the healthy goodness from escaping.
Mooloolaba Sunrise Juice (Watermelon, Orange, Pineapple & Lime)
This was all washed down with freshly squeezed juices - in our case the Mooloolaba Sunrise (orange, watermelon, pineapple and lime) to cap off an extremely satisfying and healthy lunch and for only a little over $30.00 for the both of us, Raw Energy is a great value dining out experience. We left for a stroll along the waterfront feeling 100 percent satisfied but without the food weighing us down one bit, which can often be the case after a indulgent eating out experience. While food trends come and go, the offering of quality, fresh and healthy ingredients is surely here to stay with Raw Energy playing a major part on the Sunshine Coast and soon to be other locations state and nation-wide. Watch this space.
