"Knock knock" "Who's there?""The Raw Comedy Open Mic Finals"
Laughter comes in all shapes and sizes - and so do comedians. There were very tall ones, and very small ones, big beards and small hats - gender, race, sexual orientation and religion. There was slow and laconic, there was fast paced, there were visual gags and dance routines. Some of it worked – some of it missed the mark. But there is no doubt the life of a would-be comedian is not all laughs – it's hard work winning over an audience.
Even host Nazeem Hussain had his work cut out for him. The biggest laughs of the evening were for Scottish comedian Larry Dean, hired to keep the audience happy while the judges conferred at the end of the evening. The comparison was telling - smooth, relaxed, polished, hilarious: no edge-of-the-seat nerves – and that's just the audience members, who want the contestants to make them laugh for everyone's sake.
Clearly being a successful comic is like any other profession - it takes time and practice. This year, winner Victorian Danielle Walker gets the chance to hone her talents at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and join the likes of Adam Spencer, Josh Thomas and Hannah Gadsby, past Raw Comedy winners made good.
