Brisbane university student and aspiring writer constantly satisfying my craving for adventure and experiencing the diversity of life. Come explore Queensland with me. What will I get up to next?
Delve into the the indie undergound every second month
Tread carefully into the underground to experience indie art. From the depths you will find make up artists, film masters and painters among several other talented individuals and works. On the 19th of July and every second month at the Arena on 210 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley you will find Elevation. It is a celebration and exhibition of unique and diverse fresh artists dressed as a cocktail party.
Film, fashion, music, visual art, photography, performing art, hair and make up. If it is creative it can be art and it will be found here. Some art seems to capture its maker's very soul, like photographer Elle Irvine. Through her art she give a voice to something she has a great passion for: eating disorders. A note accompanies some of her disorder works written by the suffering subject. Irvine is doubtlessly one of the most powerful featured artists on showcase this July.
A lot of the featured individuals truly are starving but talented artists. The night and RAW offers them a platform for future success. Previously hidden indie musicians are also given the chance to put their name out there. My favourite featured musician is Andrew Markwell and his song Poltergeist. The chorus has harsh vocals bleeding with emotions that I can feel within me.
My favourite fashion artist that I have come across whilst perusing RAW is Amber Alexis (the 'alter ego' of Ren Ayling). The core reason for this is because her designs are fashionable, allegedly affordable (I cannot find a price tag) and, unlike a percentage of artistic fashion, is actually wearable.
After seeing the trailer online for Backpackers by Tahlia Rose, I am completely besotted. I think a large amount of that can be attributed to the lovely soft tone of the character Peter's voice. I must watch this short film. Check out the trailer and see if I am crazy (likely). Rose is featured for this event so I hope there is a viewing.
The night will be hosted by new TV presenter Bliss Nixon and the soundtrack for the night will be provided by DJ BLACK AMEX . This a strictly 18 plus event so creative expression will not be restricted in any way. RAW is international, with branches in 81 locations worldwide. If you, lovely reader, are reading this and have a creative dream of your own, you can apply to be RAW artist too by submitting your work. Do not let yourself be shadow.
Art has the incredible ability to influence the way you feel. Often these emotions can be deep and can become the epicenter of an earthquake of questions and probing thoughts. These artists have no boundaries and in every stroke, camera click and puff of hair spray is a little sliver of themselves. They want to share this, themselves, with you.
Every two months, approximately 40 local and up and coming artists are hand picked to be show cased. Artists who may have never been discovered and shared if not for this exploration of the indie underground. Tickets can be brought online for $15, however, they can also be brought at the door for the inflated price of $20 (cash only). A cash cocktail bar will also be available and it will be a cocktail party so come looking as beautiful as their painted canvases. Lastly, be sure to buckle up because you are going to be blown away.
As mentioned previously, this is recurring event with the next showcase occurring in September. With forty new artists to be plucked from the shadows, the new exhibition will be called 'RAW Brisbane presents Translations'. This will be a whole new experience with each artist being no less unique and it will make for an equally inspiring and entertaining night.
