Love Game of Thrones? Then recap at Mary Mae's every Tuesday

Game of Thrones is back and so is the Mother of Kittens herself Natalie Bochenski to recap these final episodes. The No.1 show in the world is coming to an end after 10 years, eight seasons and countless "what the" moments that we all shared in. Befitting the occasion the long running Raven On podcast is now being recorded live out of the Mary Mae's bar at the Brisbane Powerhouse. Once filled with the impressive sound equipment and a couple of dozen people enjoying some bar food and drinks, the atmosphere in the room is one of friends getting together. Something Bochenski fosters with her own actions, introducing herself as people enter, getting a group selfie at the end and bantering with some commentators in the crowd who are obviously old friends.
The podcast stars her and fellow Brisbane writer Stuart Layt and they share a nice rapport. It's clear they know their stuff when it comes to the show and books and as writers they have a critical mind which comes in handy. With Bochenski's background in comedy, Layt seems happy to play the straight man in their pairing but he occasionally gets the last laugh revealing the strength of their partnership.
They do a great job of unpacking episodes' events and making informed predictions for next week, their love and dissection of characters and their motivations shining through. That said there are some delightful tangents which may prove the highlight of any episode with this week including watching porn and pizza shapes versus chicken crimpies – not necessarily related.
Neither is afraid to read the crowd and interact with them and if you're lucky you might even find yourself featuring in the podcast. Part of the joy is actually being there to see behind the scenes, whether that's radio personalities getting drunk nearby in the main bar or part of the show being recorded out of order. On the night we went, there were special musical guests who did a stunning rendition of Jenny of Oldstones.
Bochenski is now featuring on Foxtel's program Thrones 360 Live which goes over the episodes after they air too, a reflection of what she has achieved with her own recaps and a huge career win. Yet I would argue the best recaps in the country can be seen for free at Mary Mae's on a Tuesday night, with good friends, a good Scotch and a toast to the Mother of Kittens.
