Great country pub with country style meals & country service
Rathdowney is a little town with a population of around 300 people that is not really on the way to anywhere. But if you do find yourself in this wonderful little rural village, a pitstop in the Rathdowney Hotel, known as the Rathy Hotel, for a beer or a country pub meal is well worth it.
The European settlement started in this area in 1842 but the name Rathdowney was first used for a large pastoral station in 1876 and was named Rathdowney Station. This name comes from the town in Ireland and was also used for the town here in Queensland.
The area is good cattle country and you will see numerous herds all around the area. Previously, the region also saw extensive logging, including areas such as the current Mount Barney National Park.
The main attraction in the area is hiking and camping on the various trails and peaks of Mount Barney National Park, where there are great walking tracks, swimming holes, off-trail hikes and the peaks of Mount Barney, Mount Maroon and Mount Lindsey.
The main natural attraction near Rathdowney is Mount Barney National Park
Other than people heading to the national park and other places around town, there is also a road to NSW passing through the town. The main attraction in town is a lovely heritage museum which can be a reason to stop in the town. I do know people who have spent a long weekend in some of the accommodation around the area.
Established in the early 20th Century, the Rathy Hotel has been the cornerstone of social life in the Rathdowney community. The pub features seating at the bar, a separate bar area with a pool table, a dining room, a well-covered beer garden, as well as outdoor tables out in the garden proper.
On a quiet day, you will still see people propping up the bar but not many other people, so you can easily come in here for a quiet meal or drink. At the time of writing this article, most entertainment events had been cancelled but hopefully, in the near future, they will again be hosting live music, DJs and other entertainment on various Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

The food is split between light and full meals. Though of, course, in a country pub, the definition of a light and full meal is a bit different from what city folk expect. Typical light meals include burgers and steak sandwiches. The best thing about the steak sandwich is the light tender steak, which you would expect from a steak from cattle country, though you do get more sandwich than steak.
For a lighter meal there are options like the steak sandwich
Their pizzas are also very popular and can be good as a $6 light lunch or a $20 main meal. Their chicken parmigiana is very filling and their steaks are juicy and tasty. Meals and burgers come with thick-cut chips cooked to perfection and a classic pub salad.
Let me assure you that behind this gigantic chicken parmigiana
There is also an attached Rathdown Motel, which is a nice place to stop for a short stay and you can walk between the pub and the motel. It is just your basic country motel and most people looking for a longer stay will seek out better accommodation outside of town.
The Rathy is a completely unpretentious country pub that serves all of your classic pub meals with country-style service. Every time we hike in the area, we end up back there for a least a beer and, if we time it for kitchen opening times, a meal.
