Rasa Rasa is a small Peranakan shop on Penang island. It offers both good quality and good value cooking and has received the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand award for two consecutive years. Its menu features a classic pandan nasi lemak and a signature bihun with a fried egg among other dishes. You can choose various add-ons and extras to accompany the nasi lemak and bihun, however, this smaller portion was more than sufficient for me. I visited twice in four days.

The standout in both dishes is definitely the homemade sambal tumis. A blend of chillies is ground with aromatics and then sauteed in oil. And, the resulting flavour suits my taste buds perfectly. I enjoyed the pleasurable contrast between the mild heat from the sambal and the richness of the pandan coconut milk-infused rice. The rice also came with fried anchovies, cucumber, fried peanuts, hard-boiled egg and long beans all served on a banana leaf.

A great way to finish off your meal at Rasa Rasa is by indulging in a cold bowl of tub tim krob, or otherwise known as red rubies due to its appearance. This special Thai dessert consists of jackfruits and water chestnuts served in coconut milk. I must say the combination was utterly delicious.
